Akshaya Tritiya


Introduction

Akshaya Tritiya also referred as Akha Teej is considered the most auspicious days of all by Hindus in India. The pious day of Akshay Trithiya falls on the third day (Tithi) of Bright phase of moon (Shukla Paksha) of Hindu month of Vaishakha. The name Akshay Trithiya describes the special planetary positions of Moon, Sun and Jupiter, as on this day all three unanimously come under Mrigshira Nakshatra. Moon and Sun both glow at their brightest level, indicating the auspiciousness of the day.
The day of Akshay Trithiya is considered highly auspicious by Hindus as the day is thought to bring good fortune and prosperity for every one. The literal meaning of Akshay in Sanskrit means imperishable or “never diminishing” and thus the day is believed to be the best time for beginning new ventures or investing money in precious metals and land.


Myths and Legends:


Akshay Trithiya is also referred as golden day of eternal success as the Golden Age or the first of the four Yugas, Satya yug began on this day. Akha Teej also marks the birthday of Sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu - Lord Parshuram. The auspicious day also holds special importance as the holy river Ganga also descended down to earth from heaven on the same day. Vedavyas along with Lord Ganesha started writing the great Hindu scriptures, Mahabharatha on this day of Akshay Trithiya.
The first Tirthankar in Jainism Bhagwan Rishabdev also broke his fasting spell of one year by taking juice on the day of Akha Teej.

Akshaya Tritiya is also called Navanna Parvam. Akshaya Tritiya falling in a conjunction with Rohini star day is considered more auspicious.

Akshay Trithiya is the most awaited festival all over India. The day of Akha Teej is considered auspicious and so different trends are practiced on this day across the country to bring good luck and prosperity. Many people believe buying Gold or other precious metals like diamond and platinum ushers good fortune for them. Markets are seen crowded on the occasion of Akshay Trithiya for buying valuable products and jewelry as things possessed on this day remain forever.


Even good deals of immobile properties are also fixed on the day of Akha Teej. Many people start their new business or shift to their new house or start constructing new house on this pious day of Akshay Trithiya. The day is considered the most auspicious time for weddings so many weddings are also planned on the day of Akshay Trithiya.

Rajasthan:
Akshay Trithiya is more commonly called Akha Teej in Rajasthan. The day is considered the shubh Mahurat or the best time for tying new knots of relationship between a couples. Largest numbers of weddings are performed on the day of Akha Teej in different cities and villages of Rajasthan. Rajasthan Government is still struggling with the problem of large number of child marriages in various villages on this occasion.


West Bengal
Akshay Trithiya is the important occasion for all business men in West Bengal. The popular trend of Hal Khataa is practiced on this day. This trend involves offering pooja to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi and starting of new audit book and accounts.


Orissa
Akshay Trithiya is related to farmers and agriculture in Orissa. Farmers sow new seed for the next round of farming after paying homage to Goddess Lakshmi for better crop in the following year. The festival is referred as Muthi Chuhaana in western part of the state. People avoid in take of green leafy vegetables and non vegetarian food on this day. The popular Jagannath Yatra also begins on this day.


North India
In North India, the festival is related to puja and worship. Akshay Trithiya is mainly celebrated as the birthday of Lord Parshu Ram, sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Religious practices of visiting different pilgrimages, taking holy dips in Ganges, performing yagya, donating food and money and offering barley in sacred fire are few of the common celebrating trends in North India.


South India
Shri Maha Vishnu Pooja and Lakshmi Kubera Homa are mainly practiced on Akshay Trithiya Day. Goddess Lakshmi also worshipped on this day. Religious practices of visiting different temples and donating food and money are common on Akshay Trithiya Day.

The auspicious day of Akshay Trithiya falls on the third day of bright phase of moon in the Hindu month of Vaisakh. In 2011, the Akshay Trithiya festival will be celebrated on May 6 th, Friday.
